Litigation Lawyer - Insurance (AC410)

German-Qualified Insurance Litigation Lawyer

About Our Client
Our client is a well-established European insurance subsidiary of a major UK financial services group with over 200 years of heritage. Based in Luxembourg, they manage a substantial portfolio of legacy life and pension policies with approximately €2 billion in assets and 50,000 policyholders across Europe.
Following the UK's exit from the EU, operations were successfully consolidated in Luxembourg, creating a dynamic, international, and collaborative environment with a lean team of 37 professionals who value both expertise and collegiality.
This is a genuine opportunity to join a small, tight-knit legal team where your work directly impacts business strategy and you'll enjoy exceptional work-life balance rarely found in the legal profession.

The Opportunity
Due to continued growth in their German portfolio, we're seeking a second German-qualified lawyer to join their complaints and litigation team. This is not a typical insurance role, you'll be managing a fascinating legacy portfolio where policies sold 15-20 years ago now face modern regulatory scrutiny and evolving legal interpretations.

What Makes This Role Unique:
  • High-impact, strategic work: You're not just reviewing files, you're developing defense strategies for complex, high-volume German policyholder disputes
  • Cost-conscious approach: Help bring legal work in-house to reduce external counsel dependency while maintaining quality
  • Cross-border complexity: Apply German law from Luxembourg, working with external counsel across jurisdictions
  • Volume and variety: No two days are the same, you'll handle everything from straightforward complaints to sophisticated litigation matters
  • Direct business exposure: Small team means close collaboration with Finance, Risk, and senior management

Your Day-to-Day:
You'll be the go-to expert for German insurance disputes, working autonomously with limited supervision:
  • Analyze and respond to German policyholder complaints and legal challenges regarding life and pension policies
  • Develop litigation strategy and defense positions in coordination with external law firms
  • Draft sophisticated legal responses in German, crafting compelling arguments that protect the company's interests
  • Instruct and manage external counsel across Germany, ensuring cost-effectiveness and quality
  • Prepare management reports on litigation trends, exposure, and case developments
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with Finance, Risk, Operations, and senior leadership
  • Anticipate legal trends in German insurance litigation and proactively advise on emerging risks

The Types of Disputes You'll Handle:
German policyholders frequently challenge historical policy sales based on:
  • Alleged advisory duty breaches (Beratungspflichtverletzung)
  • Cancellation notice deficiencies (Widerrufsbelehrung)
  • Transparency and disclosure issues
  • Evolving interpretations of insurance contract law
  • Changes in consumer protection regulations

This creates a steady pipeline of intellectually challenging work where you'll need to defend positions based on limited historical documentation while navigating modern legal standards.

About You
  • Fully qualified German lawyer with both Staatsexamen (First and Second State Examinations)
  • 2-5 years post-qualification experience in litigation, disputes, or complaints management (in-house or in a law firm)
  • Insurance or financial services background, ideally, you've worked on insurance disputes, banking litigation, or in courts handling similar matters (German client portfolio)
  • Worked in German courts (Referendariat), where insurance cases were heard
  • Experience in instructing and coordinating with law firms
  • Comfortable juggling multiple matters simultaneously
  • Excellent German legal writing skills: you must be capable of drafting complex legal documents, responses, and correspondence with precision and clarity
  • Fluent English (written and spoken), you'll work in an international environment and report in English
  • Comfortable managing a caseload with limited supervision
  • You understand how companies work and can translate legal advice into practical business solutions
  • Personality: collaborative and personable, pragmatic and solution-oriented, proactive and curious, excellent communicator, adaptable and agile, and detail-oriented yet strategic.

What's On Offer
  • Competitive base salary paid in 13 monthly installments, discretionary performance bonus, attractive cash benefits package in lieu of traditional benefits, 35.5 vacation days per year, Flex time policy, any overtime hours can be taken as time off.
  • Work directly with senior management
  • International exposure
  • Autonomy and responsibility
  • Career progression opportunities in a growing organization
  • Flat hierarchy, International and informal culture, part of a major UK banking group with 200+ years of history and financial stability

If you're a German-qualified lawyer (both Staatsexamen) with insurance or financial services litigation experience and you're ready for a role that offers both intellectual challenge and quality of life, we want to hear from you.
